Conflicts in the neighborhood

28-06-2026

Introduction The neighborhood is deeply interesting and had received waves of attention from urban planners, sociologists and the like. In this blog I will explain the conflicts that I have identified between individuals, groups of people in the neighborhood Klarendal. Diametricism I found a relatively simple way to categorize these conflicts by first describing the very specific point of friction, debate and displeasure. Then synthesizing those conflicts into a more generic category and finding the diametric opposites of these more general conflicts.

Data loss

28-06-2026

Yesterday, my girlfriend was scrolling through her whatsapp as she does. When seemingly out of nowhere disaster struck and her chat history was flushed right out of her phone. There she was, feeling like a large part of her history had been undone and she felt very emotional afterwards. There was a backup, but it was a year old. The google drive storage was completely filled. So no chance there.

The hot and humid city

27-06-2026

I read about places where the temperature and humidity are so high, that cooling down via sweating isn’t an option anymore.

In the name of the valley - Ascetic seclusion

07-06-2026

This blog post delves deeper into the history of the current park Klarenbeek. Not to be confused with the other Klarenbeek, which is located higher up north and is more near the city Apeldoorn than it is to Arnhem. I’ll have to admit my own confusion, as I has previously lived by some facts that apparently were in line with the history of the other Klarenbeek. But now, a short history on Arnhem’s very own Klarenbeek.

The birth of Klarendal

07-06-2026

As the city grew more prosperous and stability came to the lands, the national government allowed their cities to decommission the fortifications and defensive walls that constricted urban development. Arnhem seized the moment and began the massive undertaking of tearing down the walls, which required many workers whom also required housing and amenities and the like. To facilitate these new workers, the city constructed new housing, concentrically to the old defensive works.

An anatomy of volksbuurt

06-06-2026

In the Netherlands there is the fascinating neighbourhood type volksbuurt. These are the neighbourhoods for the people and - also by the people. Allow me to introduce a particular neighbourhood that is very dear to me, known as Klarendal. It is a place where people knew each other by name and nickname. Yes, among the older inhabitants, there is the tradition of assigning nicknames like The Mouse or The Giant. These are not necessarily linked to one’s physical attributes.
